Cubic boron nitride tool chipping causes and solutions

In the field of modern machining, PCBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) tools have become an important tool for efficient machining due to their excellent hardness and wear resistance. However, PCBN tools sometimes chipped in the process of use, which brought a lot of trouble to the production. Today, we will analyze the causes of PCBN chipping and discuss the corresponding solutions.

PCBN tool chipping is probably due to the following reasons:

1: cutting parameters are not reasonable Cutting speed is too high may lead to the tool instantly withstand excessive heat and impact, thus causing chipping. Too large a feed will increase the amount of cutting per tooth, making the tool edge overburdened. Solution: Optimize the cutting parameters, according to the characteristics of the processing materials and tools, select the appropriate cutting speed, feed and depth of cut. Find the best combination of parameters through testing and experience.

2: Improper tool installation The tool is not clamped during installation, which generates vibration during machining and easily causes chipping. The tool and the machine spindle have different axes, which will lead to uneven distribution of cutting force and increase the risk of chipping. Solution: Use a suitable fixture to clamp the tool securely. Check the coaxiality of the tool and the machine tool spindle before mounting and make the necessary adjustments.

3: Problems with the machining material The presence of hard spots, inclusions and other uneven components in the material will cause the tool to be locally overloaded during cutting, triggering chipping. Solution:Pre-treatment of machining materials to remove inclusions and hard points in the material and improve the uniformity of the material

4: Problems with the quality of the tool itself Poor manufacturing process of the tool, such as microscopic defects in the cutting edge, internal cracks, etc., will reduce the strength of the tool, which will easily lead to chipping. Solution: Choose high-quality PCBN tools, purchase from well-known manufacturers, reliable quality tool products.

5: Insufficient cooling and lubrication Lack of effective cooling and lubrication will make the tool in the cutting process temperature is too high, exacerbate wear, and even chipping. Solution: strengthen the cooling and lubrication selection of suitable cooling lubricants, and to ensure that it is fully supplied in the machining process.

In short, to solve the problem of PCBN chipping, we need to consider a number of factors, from the optimization of cutting parameters, tool installation and selection, to the processing of materials and cooling lubrication to strengthen and so on. Only in this way can the advantages of PCBN tools be fully utilized, production costs reduced and machining efficiency and quality improved.
